“I saw the future when I saw the incredible Neuron design and drone installation.”

We are happy to welcome Tom Cleaver to Heimdall Power as our new Vice President in the United States. With an electrical engineering degree and over 35 years of experience in the electric power and utility industry, Tom brings an impressive breadth of expertise to Heimdall Power.

Tom spent more than 18 years at Cooper Industries (now Eaton), where he held various sales, management, and executive roles. During his tenure, he led corporate-wide initiatives in utility substation and grid technologies and played a key role in developing early renewable energy and data center markets. Following his time at Eaton, Tom spearheaded early commercial efforts to launch Grid Enhancing Technologies (GETs), including composite High-Temperature Low-Sag (HTLS) conductors and the first commercially successful Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) technology, CAT-1. Over the past 15 years, he has held senior leadership positions at CTC Cable, Nexans, and Weidmann Electrical Technologies, continuing to pioneer cutting-edge monitoring and grid-enhancing solutions.

Reflecting on his years working with DLR in the U.S., Tom recognized the immense potential of DLR, but also the technological limitations that hindered its full adoption across grid operations, planning, design, and markets. “DLR was a very powerful tool that could not and would not be utilized across the grid. I was looking for the next evolution that would make DLR a reality for the entire grid,” Tom explained. And that search led him to Heimdall Power.

Why Heimdall Power?

“I saw the future when I first saw the incredible Neuron design and drone installation. The vast jump in hardware and software innovation would have been enough, but it was also the Heimdall vision to move beyond a single line capacity solution to a complete grid awareness and capacity enhancing system. Heimdall is driving the future of the grid, and I wanted to help bring this future to the market.”

Like the rest of us at Heimdall Power, Tom believes the electric grid is on the verge of a dramatic transformation in the coming years, if not sooner. As the sources and uses of electricity shift at an unprecedented pace, transmission owners and operators will need real-time, comprehensive insights into every part of the grid to adapt swiftly and effectively.

“The technology is now available for DLR and grid awareness monitoring to be implemented across every line, in every part of the grid. This will soon become a standard feature of the transmission infrastructure. Much like seat belts in cars, we will eventually forget how we ever operated without complete transmission grid monitoring.”

Welcome to the team Tom! We’re happy to have you on board as we work together to push the boundaries of what’s possible in grid monitoring and capacity enhancement.
