Heimdall Power and the Norwegian DSO Fagne have signed an agreement to digitize Fagne’s whole regional transmission grid.

We are happy to announce that Heimdall Power and the Norwegian DSO Fagne have signed an agreement to digitize Fagne’s whole regional transmission grid in Haugalandet, Sunnhordland, inner Ryfylke, and parts of Hardanger. The goal of the project is to increase the utilization of the power grid in the region.

Fagne is a electric utility headquartered in Haugesund, supplying electricity to about 150,000 residents. Until now, their grid operations have been based on estimates. However, a combination of software and sensors from Heimdall Power will now provide real-time information on the actual transmission capacity in their grid. With this new insight, Fagne will be able to identify additional available capacity in its existing power grid.

Fagne is already one of over 40 companies worldwide that have implemented Heimdall Power’s solutions.
– This significant scaling up of the companies’ previous collaboration is a step in the right direction to meet both national and global climate goals, says Jørgen Festervoll, CEO of Heimdall Power. Kristoffer Vannes, Director at Fagne, agrees:

"This is a very exciting project for Fagne to be a part of. The sensors will give us a much better overview of how much power can be sent through the power lines in our region. We know we have to expand the power grid for society to meet climate goals, but this could make it easier to transport enough electricity to our customers in the short term."

The project will involve digitizing Fagne’s entire regional transmission grid, with a planned start-up before summer. The contract includes 70 physical sensors, called Neurons, and several hundred virtual sensors, called Virtual Neurons.
– In kilometers, Fagne’s power grid is longer than all the national roads in Norway combined. This technology enables us to effectively overview large geographical areas with power grids”, says Vannes. With Festervoll adding the following closing remarks:

"I would like to thank Fagne for an efficient process, and look forward to getting started with this project before the summer. With this system-wide deployment, we expect to be able to make at least 30% additional capacity available in Fagne’s grid."

This agreement with Fagne follows in the footsteps of the groundbreaking project for system-wide capacity monitoring between Heimdall Power and Elvia, announced in the fall of 2023. This new project will therefore be Heimdall Power’s second full-scale deployment, which means that all of the utility company’s power lines will be digitized. This involves placing both physical and virtual sensors on all of Fagne’s lines, which will provide them with better predictability and the opportunity to optimize the operation of their power grid to a much greater extent than what has previously been possible.
