Bayernwerk Netz GmbH has taken another step to further improve its power grid by increasing their adoption of our Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) solutions.
Following the successful implementation and immediate benefits observed from the initial Neurons (sensors) installed earlier this year, the German Distribution System Operator (DSO) is set to acquire additional sensors, significantly expanding their first order. This new contract underscores Bayernwerk Netz’s confidence in our technology and its capacity to provide real-time, actionable data that enhances grid safety and efficiency.
Bayernwerk Netz, a German DSO at the vanguard of integrating advanced technologies for enhanced grid efficiency and stability, embarked on a pilot project with Heimdall Power earlier this year. The initiative sought to determine whether real-world conditions would permit increased electricity distribution over existing power lines. The project, which began with the installation of multiple Neurons (sensors) in the high-voltage network in Upper Palatinate and Lower Bavaria, has since yielded very promising results. Originally intended as a one-year trial to assess the potential of grid-enhancing technologies (GET) in optimizing grid utilization and integrating renewable energy, the pilot quickly expanded. With the new contract now secured, Bayernwerk Netz will deploy more Neurons across its grid. This rapid adoption and expansion underscore the tangible benefits this technology offers in maintaining optimal grid performance and safety.
One of the critical objectives for Bayernwerk Netz was to verify the sag of their power lines and ensure the correct distance of the conductors from the ground. Prior to the pilot project, they relied on standard values and theoretical assumptions to calculate the load on their lines. Thomas Schiml, project manager at Bayernwerk Netz, elucidated to Elektropraktiker: “Currently, our calculations are based on the specifications of the cable manufacturers and very conservative assumptions. For instance, we always assume that the conductors are exposed to full sunlight and heat throughout the year, which theoretically increases their sag.” Heimdall Power’s DLR technology guarantees that the minimum distance to the ground is consistently maintained.
In the near future, our Neurons will continuously supply Bayernwerk Netz with critical data, including the angle and temperature of the cables, as well as voltage and current. Meanwhile, the Neuron will integrate information from sources such as the German Weather Service, encompassing temperature, wind speed and direction, solar radiation, and precipitation. Gradually, the system will learn to determine the optimal load under varying weather conditions, enabling precise predictive capabilities. With our Neurons, Bayernwerk Netz can base the load of the lines on real-time data. “If there is no sunlight on the line and wind is cooling it, it means we can increase the load and feed more power into the grid without violating the distance norms,” Thomas Schiml explained to Oberpfalz Echo.
Our innovative Neurons featured quite prominently in Bayernwerk Netz’s annual presentation this year, highlighting their pivotal role in the utility’s strategy to integrate more renewable energy into the grid while maintaining strict safety and efficiency standards. The signing of the new contract, just eight months after the initial agreement, highlights how our solutions are quickly delivering visible value for utilities.
